They could have easily dived into the history of the first Avatar with the same exact animation style, but I’m totally glad they went the extra mile in animating this episode. Even the spirits themselves were very Studio Ghibli, and it worked perfectly in presenting this story. It was obviously aiming for an old school anime approach, aping (amongst others) the early works of Miyazaki. Thankfully though, the stylistic change was a warranted one-The Legend Of Korra’s cell shaded, CGI using animation is always great to watch, but “Beginnings” was absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Almost immediately this feels like a different show entirely, as the animation style in and of itself changes drastically. Thankfully though, it was the former, as the story of Wan the first Avatar isn’t just great mythology building for the Avatar series-it’s one of the franchise’s best episodes yet.įrom the moment we dove into the Wan flashback, I knew this would be a special episode. With the highly anticipated, hour long flashback episode of The Legend Of Korra airing tonight, I couldn’t help but wonder (and fear) what side of the spectrum “Beginnings” would land on. But explain too much and you get a Phantom Menace situation on your hands-plot holes erupt, fans rebel, yadda yadda yadda. On the one hand, new mythology is the best-it can add so many layers to the series and expand a story to be something grand and more than the sum of its parts, which is something that pretty much every big franchise aims to do.
